At Treehaus, designing spaces for the church is a vision rooted in faith and purpose. As Christians, Esther & Zi Tong share a heart to serve through architecture. This page is an invitation to church leaders, building committees, and congregations looking for an architectural partner who understands both the technical and the sacred.

Esther studied in an Anglican school and has attended New Creation Church since she was a child. Zi Tong grew up in a Methodist church, studied in a Catholic school, spent time in a Presbyterian congregation, and currently worships at Hakka Methodist Church. Together, their backgrounds give our team a working appreciation of different traditions, polities, and ministry needs across denominations. A 120-year-old Anglican sanctuary, a Methodist church running three language services, and an independent congregation meeting in a converted industrial unit are three very different design problems. We have learned not to assume.

What makes a church project different

A church is rarely a blank site. Most projects we see are one of four situations: an addition and alteration to a consecrated building with heritage or conservation constraints; a change of use to bring a congregation into commercial or industrial premises; a fit-out of leased space where every dollar of capital expenditure must be justified against a lease term; or a full redevelopment on a place-of-worship site with a fixed plot ratio.

Every one of these turns on approvals. Change of use and Written Permission from URA, building plan approval from BCA, fire safety clearance from SCDF for assembly occupancies, accessibility compliance, and an acoustic and M&E strategy that decides whether the room actually works — for the spoken word and for sung worship alike. We treat this as the core of the project, not paperwork bolted on at the end.

Stewardship of the building fund

Church projects are funded by the giving of a congregation, and they are usually scrutinised by a building committee, a board, and the membership. We work with transparent cost planning, clear value-engineering options presented with their trade-offs rather than quiet substitutions, and documentation your committee can actually read and vote on. Where a phased build lets you start with less, we will say so.

We built it from our own research — 585 congregations across 17 denominational families, from the Catholic Archdiocese and the three Methodist conferences to the independent and non-denominational congregations that make up a growing share of the landscape.
